Somersaults and Handsprings on the Trampoline

Handspring

I get a few questions every week from members asking how to do a somersault, and they mention that they can do handsprings on the trampoline, or they have been practicing handsprings on the trampoline.

Handsprings are not a trampoline move, and they do not help in somersaulting on the trampoline.

The handspring is a GYMNASTIC move and as so many Gymnastic coaches also teach the trampoline, many people are taught the trampoline in a similar way to gymnastic coaching.

However, most gymnastic moves use speed and travel across the floor, neither of which are required for the trampoline. In fact, obvious injury would occur if these same techniques were used on a trampoline.

My first trampoline coach was a gymnastic coach. Everything I learned from the age of 15 to 18 years had to be undone and re-taught. As I got on to more sophisticated moves, the flaws  in my basic coaching started to show. Under a new coach, I had to start from scratch all over again. Considering I had attended a few competitions, it was difficult to go to gym and practice bouncing, tuck jumps and swivel hips for 6 months so I could totally forget the more advanced moves and re-learn them. This personal experience taught me that the trampoline moves need to be taught very differently to gymnastic coaching, and is where I got my own coaching style.

When I began coaching in 1989, I taught my students how the trampoline works, and never did moves that required knee or hand landings, as there are no trampoline moves that require a hand or knee landing. The only exception to this rule is the barani layout. As this was one of my own ‘problem moves’, I also had trouble teaching it effectively. So I do now teach this with a knee and hand landing as a progressive step.

So gymnasts - drop everything you have learned before stepping on a trampoline, and keep the handsprings and round-offs for the gymnastic floor.

Trampolines are Dangerous!

The majority of questions I answer on the Internet relate to the severe reputation of the trampoline being Soooooo Dangerous!

There is no doubt that the Trampoline can be a dangerous piece of equipment, and many minor injuries are incurred because people do not know haw to trampoline properly - thus I am attempting to help people keep safe by teaching my trampoline course.

However, I would like to reiterate that the main reason trampolines get such a bad rap is because the trampoline is often used like this:

YOUTUBE VIDEO

When this kid breaks his arm, (or neck), it will be recorded as an accident caused by the trampoline by the hospital! It’s no wonder the hospitals are recording so many “trampoline accidents”! It’s a shame they do not record “Stupidity Accidents” as I am sure their files would be bulging and the poor old trampoline wouldn’t be the ‘bad guy’ for a change. For your information, hospitals record 3 times more ‘bicycle accidents’ and yet I have never read reports on how extremely dangerous the average bicycle is!!Keep Safe and use your trampoline safely.

Trampoline Questions

What is the biggest size of trampoline that you can get? And where can you get it?

17″ x 10″ is about the biggest backyard trampoline you can get and is just short of the size used for the Olympics.

They also have a professional ‘webbed’ bed which is what makes them very bouncy.

These types of trampolines last for 10-20 years and you don’t have to change the springs. I am not sure where you are in the world, but here is where I bought mine:

http://www.topline-trampolines.com/

It is 16″ x 9″ and feels enormous. Incredibly springy too.

This website is building a list of places to buy all sorts of trampolines and may be able to help you:

Please help!! trampoline! (not bouncy)?
hi!…I’ve had my trampoline for just about a year, anyways me and my two friends were jumping on it last night, 1 weighs about 130, the other 160, and me like 145… it was really bouncy but i think that they must have stretched it out because today me and another friend ( she weighs 105) were trying to jump on it, but it wasnt very bouncy at all, and it seemed alot more soft. We couldnt even land on our butts, and get back up!!! this has never happened before and considering we just got it like last june we are definately not going to get a new one! So I need to know if anybody has any techniques or something that they would like to tell me, that could make my trampoline bouncy again. btw…i put water on it a little bit ago to see if it would make it better, But i dunno if it will or not…
Thanks a bunch!!!

You may need to buy some new springs. If the springs have overstretched then there is no way to make them springy again.

When you replace springs, look for super springy ones (they are FATTER than the cheap ones.

Trampolining does amazing things to your body and is the second fastest calorie burner on the planet, burning 3 times more calories than jogging.

Nasa use them to train their astronauts and scientific report on the effects of rebounding concluded it is a miracle exercise that drains your lymph system, gives a fantastic cardio workout and exercises every part of your body including the very cells of your system!

My friend started 15 minutes of trampolining twice a day and lost lots of weight, so 45 minutes is quite a lot.

If you want to use a trampoline to exercise, you need to do routines with some very basic moves.

As far as trampolines being dangerous… yes they can be if you do not use them correctly. However, A and E see far more accidents from people using their Bikes than their trampolines! Just learn how to use it properly.
