Trampoline Safety

Are Trampolines SAFE?

Yes the jolly well are!

One of the most ridiculous things I have ever read is the advice of the American Academy of Pediatrics

“If you are considering buying a trampoline, you may want to consider other activities for your children instead”.

American Academy of Pediatrics

Perhaps it is safer for your children to sit in front of their video games! Obesity and Diabetes are killers! Or take a pleasant Bike Ride? In fact, riding a bike is 276% more dangerous according to the [source].

Trampolining is safe. Provided you follow some basic rules. And, I can guarantee that a person learning to trampoline correctly, like in my course, will have minimum risk of injury as they will stay centered and be physically able to complete moves - even somersaults - without flying off the trampoline or landing on the head!

In saying that, I have personally witnessed an adult injure herself so badly, she spent the rest of her life in a wheelchair. This was whilst making the CLASSIC mistake of attempting a somersault at one end of the trampoline. ALL moves must take off and land in the very centre of the trampoline. It is common (especially for front somersaults) for the trampolinist to figure that if they take off at a certain end of the bed, they will have lots of room to land. Put simply, you shouldn’t be expecting to travel across the bed in the first place. What’s more, when you land/take off anywhere other than the centre, you are rebounded in a direction rather than straight up.

Having a clear understanding of which moves are a backward motion (such as the front somersault) and which moves are a forward motion, (such as the back somersault), helps the trampolinist understand the ‘motion’ she is attempting to achieve, and the results leave little room for error.

Children under 6 do need a good deal of supervision, although 90% of accidents do happen whilst being supervised.  I actually sit on the trampoline with my 3 year old. But then he will try to do some  pretty wild moves and is over-confident. My 5 year old is an accomplished trampolinist with very good “core strength” which helps her complete moves with little traveling across the bed. Core strength is the key to those who can trampoline and those that can’t. (read more about core strength here)

My 5 year old girl is also a little more cautious and won’t attempt a move she has not practiced with me first.

THE MOST IMPORTANT SAFETY RULE - One at a time

Almost 75% of injuries on trampolines result when more than one person is on the trampoline at the same time. When two people use the trampoline, the person weighing less is 5 times more likely to be injured than the heavier person.

I know it’s fun... BUT, if you wish to avoid serious injury, do not have multiple users on the trampoline EVER.

In summary, I am not saying that accidents are not going to happen on your trampoline. Common sense will certainly help prevent many accidents.

I have stressed that, even if you have a large round trampoline, I really do not think more than one person should be on the trampoline at any given time.

I also firmly believe, that properly trained trampolinists are less likely to have accidents. In 2002, just over 2000 trampoline accidents resulted in hospital attendance. ALL were from back-yard trampolines. NONE were from gymnasiums.

In gymnasiums, trampolines are used for what they are designed to do, under strict guidance of a coach.

Mums and Dads can certainly prevent accidents by GUIDING their kids on the trampoline and assisting their abilities.

An excellent way of doing this is by teaching your child skills through my Course promoted throughout this site.

If there is any part of my course which you do not understand...
Please contact me via email for clarification, just in case.
