Buying a Trampoline

Which trampoline? How Much?

When buying a Trampoline, like with anything.. You pay for what you get. And without a doubt, the more expensive trampolines are safer.
However, if they are totally out of your price range, second hand trampolines are always advertised in the classified section and provided they are in good condition (pads in good condition, no rust and no tears on the bed), there is no reason why you can’t pick up a bargain.
Please look at my useful links page for repairs and accessories.

Round? Square? How Big?

Round trampolines are very popular for backyard use. However, I do not recommend them myself. It may be that I am used to the gymnasium trampolines and am biased. I also feel that the large round trampolines encourage more than one person to use at the same time which is the number one cause of accidents. In saying this, the round trampoline is actually safer IF it is used by more than one person at a time because all the springs work at the same rate. This gives an even, softer, and more stable bounce. It is worth pointing out that for this very same reason, the round trampolines actually give a softer bounce which makes them harder to learn new moves on.

Round trampolines are often on sale with the popular safety nets included. Again, as a “gym trampolinist’ I see little use for the trampoline nets, other than giving the user a false sense of security.  There are many, however, who would seriously argue against me on this! Trampoline enclosures are very useful for very young children.

Without a doubt, round trampolines have a large bed and are very appealing. Millions have been sold in the US alone, ranging from 8ft diameter to the SuperTramps which are 15-17 ft.

It goes without saying that the amount of space you have available is a deciding factor.  Ensure there are no overhanging trees or obstacles which could be a danger and assess your capacity for a very large trampoline. For a new, large, round, SuperTramp you will be spending near the$US1,000. However, unless you are planning on becoming very serious, a middle range trampoline costing between $500 - $800.00 is ideal, and this price range will usually get you a very good quality trampoline in the large 12 - 14foot size range. Cheaper brands can get you this size range for $300 - $500. However, compare the bed and padding. It is your choice, but they are often inferior.

RECTANGLE TRAMPOLINES

These are the traditional shape and as mentioned above, on rectangular trampolines, the springs work at different rates giving a quick response and results in a more powerful lift. This makes it more suitable for gymnastic use. However, because of these characteristics rectangular trampolines should only be used by one jumper at a time. The good news is that, due to popularity of the round trampolines, the rectangle ones are a little bit cheaper, which is good news.
